Five questions to ask before your team offsite
Team Selgars · · 1 min read
Listen before setting the agenda
Ask each person what needs a decision, what repeatedly slows their work, which conversation they avoid, what they need from another team and what would make the trip worthwhile. Keep responses brief. Offer a private way to raise sensitive concerns, and explain who will see them. Do not promise anonymity if the group is too small to protect it.
Turn answers into a manageable programme
Group similar answers and distinguish decisions from updates. Send routine updates in advance. Choose a small number of questions that genuinely need people together, then show the team how their responses shaped the programme. Park topics you cannot address and name a later route for them. Collecting concerns without explaining what happens next can create more frustration than asking nothing.
Plan your next step
For the wider context, read our planning guide. If you are working through the next practical detail, a decision log that survives the journey home follows naturally from this.
You can also explore team retreat options. Bring the details of your group or stay to the conversation so we can discuss what fits, rather than assuming every arrangement is included.
