Writing a decision brief for a team offsite
Team Selgars · · 1 min read
Give the meeting a decision it can actually make
Before reserving an offsite, write one sentence beginning: by the end, we will have decided. Name the person authorised to make that decision, the people who need to contribute and the evidence they need beforehand. A discussion about improving collaboration is difficult to finish. Agreeing how two teams hand work to each other is a task with a visible result.
Separate preparation from discussion
Send a short brief containing the problem, constraints, options and unresolved questions. Ask participants to add missing facts before travelling. At the offsite, give everyone silent reading time, then discuss the disagreements rather than presenting the whole brief again. Finish with a decision, owner and review date. If important evidence is missing, record the next investigation instead of forcing agreement.
Plan your next step
For the wider context, read our planning guide. If you are working through the next practical detail, five questions to ask before your team offsite follows naturally from this.
You can also explore team retreat options. Bring the details of your group or stay to the conversation so we can discuss what fits, rather than assuming every arrangement is included.
