Hiring a venue in Devon: what to know before you book

Devon is not one place
South Devon is coastal, busy and expensive in summer. North Devon is wilder and further from everything. Dartmoor and Exmoor are dramatic and hard to reach in bad weather. Mid-Devon — the Culm Valley, Tiverton, Cullompton — is the quiet agricultural middle, and it is the bit with the best transport links, which surprises people.
Transport is the deciding factor
Tiverton Parkway is on the main London Paddington line, and the journey is close to two hours. That single fact makes mid-Devon viable for London groups in a way that most of the West Country is not.
Check which station your venue actually means, and how far it is from there. "Near Exeter" can mean a forty-minute drive.
Seasonality and price
Devon prices track the holiday season hard. July and August are expensive and busy; October to April is quiet and much better value. If your event does not need warmth outdoors, book the off season and spend the difference on food.
The rural realities
Single-track lanes and coaches do not mix — check access if you are bringing one. Mobile signal varies by network within a mile. Nearest shop can genuinely be fifteen minutes away. None of these are problems if you know about them in advance, and all of them are if you do not.
