Devon
Devon in winter is better than Devon in August

The county empties
Summer Devon is holiday Devon: full car parks, booked restaurants, queues on the A38. From October the whole place exhales. The lanes are yours, the pubs have space, and everything costs less.
The landscape is more interesting
Bare trees show you the shape of the land, which summer hides entirely. The river is loud. The light in January, when it comes, is extraordinary and lasts about twenty minutes, which is part of why it lands.
What you need
Proper waterproofs, boots you do not mind ruining, and a willingness to go out in weather you would stay in for at home. Devon rain is persistent rather than dramatic. It is entirely survivable and the reward is having the place to yourself.
And what you get indoors
A fire, a full kitchen, and everyone in the same room because there is nowhere else to be. Winter is when a house full of people is at its best.
