A year in the Culm Valley, season by season

Spring: the loud one
From March the birds are relentless and the hedgerows go from bare to impassable in about six weeks. Wet underfoot well into April. The best time for anyone who wants to feel a place waking up.
Summer: the busy one
Long evenings, everything outdoors, and the county full of holidaymakers. Good for weddings and large gatherings, less good for solitude. Nights can still be cold in a tent.
Autumn: the best-kept secret
Colour, mist off the water in the mornings, mushrooms, and nobody about. The most underrated season here and the one we would choose for a retreat if we were booking one.
Winter: the close one
Dark by four, wet, and the reason our coliving season runs through it. Everything happens indoors and around a fire, and the group gets a closeness that no other time of year produces.
