Stargazing in mid-Devon

How dark it actually gets

Dark enough to see the Milky Way on a clear moonless night. For someone who has only ever seen an urban sky, this lands as a real event, and it is free.

Give it twenty minutes

Your eyes take that long to adapt properly, and one person checking their phone resets everyone. Agree no screens before you go out, and mean it.

When to go

Winter, for the long nights and the clearest air. Around new moon rather than full. And check the forecast for cloud rather than rain — a dry night can be completely overcast.

What to take

More layers than you think, because standing still outdoors in January is colder than walking. A red torch if you have one. Something to lie on, since looking up while standing gets uncomfortable within minutes.

What are you waiting for?

Let's create some magic together!
