Using shared meals to help a group connect

Make mixing easy without making it compulsory

Meals offer a different pace from workshops. Give people enough time to eat and talk, and avoid turning every dinner into another facilitated exercise. If the group tends to split into familiar teams, a light invitation to sit somewhere new may help. Keep practical needs, hearing comfort and personal preference in mind rather than enforcing a seating game.

Keep announcements brief

Explain meal arrangements before service, including how dietary questions should be handled. Avoid important work decisions over dinner when some participants may be absent or resting. Let conversation wander if the programme has already done its job. For residential events, the meal is part of the experience, but it also needs to be a meal. People should not have to keep performing participation to earn a quiet plate of food.

Plan your next step

For the wider context, read our planning guide. If you are working through the next practical detail, a departure handover for retreat organisers follows naturally from this.

You can also explore directions to Selgars. Bring the details of your group or stay to the conversation so we can discuss what fits, rather than assuming every arrangement is included.
