Rules & Guidelines

Guidelines help us live together according to some shared values but can eventually be challenged during house meetings if a good case and solution is presented and agreed upon by the group.

  • Do not bother someone with headphones on!

  • Do not ask what the community can do for you; ask what you can do for the community.

  • In doubt, Give

  • In case of conflict, communicate face-to-face. Stay calm and show empathy. If the dispute cannot be resolved, agree to find a partial person to help. Remember, we are all adults here, and we are here for a definite period of time. Let’s make the best of it.

  • If you notice something does not work, let us know, and if you can, help us fix it

  • GROUND RULES

Rules are non negotiable that are here to make sure we all are safe and healthy as well as protect the venue and nature around.

    • No open fires except for in designated areas.

    • No candles or incense in the bedrooms. If turned on in the living room, never be the last to leave a room with a candle on.

    • Do not swim in the pond! It is shallow and silty and not very nice for swimming. A quick deep is ok.

    • Please respect our neighbours' privacy. Do not open gates or climb fences and wander into adjoining properties.

    • Use the bins provided to keep the place free from litter.

    • No excessive noise (e.g. amplified music) past 11pm outside.

    • Do not take bedding, towels, rugs or cushions outside.

    • no smoking inside any of the buildings - when smoking outside, no throwing cigarette butts out in nature.

    • If you have a pet you are required to clean up after them (inside and outside) and make sure they do not disturb others.

    • During the week in the main downstairs space, work has priority over hanging out/leisure until 6pm. On the weekend leisure time has priority.

    • Never enter someone else’s room without asking first, even if the door is kept open.

    • Always ask to borrow someone else’s items/tool/food

    • If you break or lose something (it happens!) let us know immediately so we can fix it.

    • Be mindful of your energy consumption. Turn off the lights when you leave a room for example, and keep doors closed. Every little thing helps.

    ENERGY SAVING PROCEDURES

  • Please support our efforts to reduce energy consumption and costs. Switch off lights when you leave a room, minimize the use of appliances—particularly room heaters and freezers—where possible, layer up, and keep room thermostats no higher than 20°C. Thanks!

  • Heating Controls

Millhouse—The thermostat is by the rear entrance to the kitchen. Turn it up to 20°C max. The radiator thermostats control the bedroom and other room temperatures.

Cottage—has zoned underfloor heating for upstairs, each bedroom, and bathroom. Activate the thermostat (touchscreen box on the wall) by pressing the bottom right corner. Use the up and down arrows to select the required temperature, up to 21°C max. Press the bottom right corner to switch off again (i.e., at night).

Waggon - has a wood burner and a space heater. Please only use the space heater while waiting for the fire to get going.

    - A sewage treatment plant services the mill. This means that any non-dissolvable items can clog the pipes and pumps, which could lead to blockages and flooding. Please do not flush anything non-dissolvable.

    SAFETY RULES

This building was a working mill – many of the original features have been preserved which means there are some potential hazards. Stay away from the machinery on the ground floor and beware of low beams on the top floor. The campus is surrounded by streams, including the millpond. Take extra care around waterways. There is a buoyancy aid beside the mill pond.
